Nollywood star and humanitarian Williams Uchemba has ignited controversy nationwide following his bold call for public executions of convicted kidnappers. The actor, visibly frustrated by Nigeria’s deepening insecurity, urged the government to implement strict, transparent punishments to deter criminal activity, particularly as kidnapping cases surge across the country.

In a video posted to his social media accounts, Uchemba questioned why Nigeria’s death penalty laws for kidnapping remain largely unenforced. He argued that public accountability through visible punishment would serve as a strong deterrent.

“The capital punishment for kidnapping is death, yet when offenders are arrested, we hardly hear what happens afterwards. If you ask me, there should even be a dedicated TV channel showing the arrest and public execution of convicted kidnappers. Until real consequences are enforced, nothing will change,” he declared.

Citing China’s uncompromising stance on severe crimes, Uchemba maintained that fear of the law is a crucial deterrent against the rise in abductions and banditry. His remarks come amid growing public anxiety over safety as Nigeria enters the festive season, a period known for increased criminal activity.

However, his statement has divided public opinion. While some Nigerians agree that only extreme measures can restore order, others—including human rights advocates—warn that public executions would violate human rights and could damage Nigeria’s global reputation.

Despite the controversy, Uchemba’s comments underscore a broader frustration shared by many citizens who feel the government has failed to address the worsening security crisis effectively. His plea may not lead to the adoption of such harsh policies, but it has reignited a national conversation on justice, deterrence, and the balance between morality and public safety.

As the debate continues, Nigerians are left to grapple with a difficult question: should extreme crimes require extreme punishments—or is there a more humane path to restoring security and justice?
