Hollywood paused on Thursday to honor the late, great Chadwick Boseman with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In an emotional ceremony, friends, family, and collaborators gathered to celebrate the legacy of the actor best known for embodying King T’Challa in Black Panther, as well as historical figures like Jackie Robinson and James Brown.
The day was officially declared “Chadwick Boseman Day” in Hollywood, a fitting tribute to the star who passed in 2020 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer.
A Wife’s Touching Memento
The ceremony’s most poignant moment came at the star’s unveiling. Chadwick’s widow, Simone Ledward Boseman, who accepted the 2,828th star on his behalf, ensured his presence was felt in a deeply personal way.
After the covering was removed, Simone placed a pair of Chadwick’s shoes directly onto the star. This beautiful and symbolic act ensured his feet were the first to “walk” upon his official Hollywood monument, a gesture that moved attendees to tears.
A Spiritual Teacher and Icon
Simone delivered a powerful and heartfelt tribute, reflecting on her husband’s character beyond his on-screen roles.
“In life, Chad was more than an actor, or even an artist,” she shared. “He was a spiritual teacher, fortified by a family and close friends that kept him grounded in faith… We cement your legacy as a hero and an icon. You lived with honor and you walked in truth.”
Tributes from Co-stars and Collaborators
The star, located at 6904 Hollywood Boulevard, was unveiled following tributes from those closest to him:
Viola Davis, his co-star in his final film, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, spoke about his love for his drum and how he was a “mighty mighty elixir” who stirred up the alchemy of meaning in her life.
Ryan Coogler, director of Black Panther, described Boseman as an “incredible leader” and an “incomparable jewel” who “reflected light… and showed the greatness of our people and the universe of our shared humanity.”
Fellow MCU stars Michael B. Jordan and Letitia Wright were also present, standing alongside his brothers, Derrick and Kevin Boseman, as the star was finally revealed.
The ceremony served as a powerful reminder that while the star may shine bright on the sidewalk, the light Chadwick Boseman left behind remains a timeless inspiration.
