U.S. Congressman Riley Moore (R-WV) has concluded a high-profile visit to Nigeria with a message of optimism, following extensive meetings with key government and religious stakeholders regarding the escalating violence and the controversial claim of “Christian Genocide” in the country.

Frank and Productive Dialogue
Congressman Moore, a member of the House Appropriations Committee and a vocal advocate for religious freedom, was tasked by President Donald Trump to lead an investigation into the persistent violence targeting Christian communities, particularly in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
During his visit, Moore engaged in what he described as a “frank, honest, and productive discussion” with senior Nigerian officials, including the National Security Adviser, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and the Inspector General of Police.

  • Key Discussions: The meetings focused on counter-terrorism efforts, US security assistance, protection of vulnerable communities, and the Nigerian government’s commitment to ending the violence perpetrated by groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Fulani militants.
  • A Clear Message: Moore emphasized that the United States is ready to cooperate and coordinate with Nigeria but insisted that the US “will not tolerate continued violence against Christians or other forms of religious persecution.”

Pressure and Accountability

Moore’s visit comes shortly after President Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), a label used by the US State Department for nations that engage in or tolerate “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom.”

This designation opens up several options for the US administration, including sanctions and the withholding of foreign aid.

Moore believes the Nigerian government now has a clear chance to strengthen its relationship with the U.S. by taking “tangible steps” to ensure Christians are not subject to violence, persecution, and death.
