A devastating road traffic accident on Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, has resulted in the deaths of an adult female passenger and an eight-month-old infant, leaving ten others severely injured.
The fatal collision occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, opposite Olabode House, between the Anthony and Obanikoro axis.
Excessive Speed and Mechanical Failure Cited
Preliminary reports from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) indicate that the crash involved two commercial vehicles and was caused by a dangerous combination of excessive speed and mechanical failure.
The incident unfolded when a red Tata commercial bus, reportedly traveling at an excessively high velocity from Palmgroove towards Anthony, suddenly lost mechanical and directional control. The runaway bus veered violently off its lane, smashed through the concrete median barrier separating the carriageways, and collided head-on with a Volkswagen commercial bus traveling in the opposite direction, from Anthony towards Palmgroove.
Two Fatalities, Ten Casualties
The collision was described as extremely violent. The impact resulted in the instantaneous death of an adult female passenger aboard the Volkswagen bus.
Tragically, an eight-month-old female infant involved in the crash later succumbed to the severe injuries sustained during the collision.
The mother of the deceased infant was also among the injured and is currently receiving medical attention.
A total of ten victims, including the drivers of both vehicles, were successfully extricated from the mangled wreckage.
Six trapped passengers were rescued from the Volkswagen bus, while four others were pulled from the Tata bus.
All ten survivors sustained varying degrees of serious injuries.
Emergency Response and Call for Road Safety
LASTMA operatives, with the crucial assistance of concerned members of the public, immediately launched a coordinated rescue and recovery operation at the scene.
- The injured victims were promptly transported to nearby medical facilities by the Lagos State Ambulance Service for urgent and comprehensive care.
- Officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the remains of the deceased adult female and infant.
- Security personnel from the Ilupeju Police Division were deployed to secure the scene and manage traffic flow, which was significantly disrupted by the crash.
The General Manager of LASTMA extended deep condolences to the bereaved families and emphasized the deadly cost of recklessness on the road.
The agency cautioned all motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, against overspeeding and stressed the critical importance of ensuring vehicles are roadworthy and regularly maintained to prevent such tragic and avoidable incidents in the future.
