President Bola Tinubu has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to ensure that the 2027 general elections in Nigeria are transparent, credible, and free from violence.

Speaking during Amupitan’s inauguration in Abuja, Tinubu stressed that Nigeria’s democracy must continue to evolve through fairness and integrity in the electoral process. He said the 2027 elections should reflect the collective will of the people, calling on INEC to build public trust by strengthening transparency in voter registration, polling, and result collation.

The President reminded the electoral body that credible elections are the foundation of a stable democracy. He urged INEC to work closely with political parties, civil society, security agencies, and the media to deliver a process that Nigerians can be proud of.

Tinubu noted that while no election system is perfect, continuous improvement and adoption of technology are crucial to overcoming the challenges of the past, including irregularities, vote-buying, and violence.

The new INEC boss, Professor Amupitan, faces his first major test with the upcoming Anambra governorship election in 2025, which will serve as a litmus test for the commission’s readiness ahead of the 2027 general polls.

As Nigeria prepares for another critical electoral cycle, Tinubu’s message to the electoral commission is clear the 2027 elections must be transparent, credible, and violence-free to strengthen citizensโ€™ confidence in the democratic process
