In a powerful display of deepening military alignment, Russian strategic bombers joined Chinese counterparts for a long-range joint air patrol near Japan and South Korea on Tuesday, prompting both nations to scramble fighter jets.

The coordinated exercise—the 10th such strategic patrol between the two powers since 2019—comes at a moment of already heightened strains between Tokyo and Beijing.

The patrol lasted for approximately eight hours, with the combined fleet flying over international waters in the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the Western Pacific.

The Route and the Reaction

The Japanese Ministry of Defense reported that the joint formation included:

  • Two Russian Tu-95 nuclear-capable strategic bombers.
  • Two Chinese H-6 bombers.
  • A further four Chinese J-16 fighter jets, which joined the bombers during a round-trip flight between Japan’s Okinawa and Miyako islands.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro
Koizumi stated that the joint operation was “clearly intended as a show of force against our nation,” calling the actions a “serious concern for our national security.” Japanese jets were scrambled to monitor the mission and “strictly implemented air defense identification measures.”

South Korea’s military also confirmed that seven Russian and two Chinese aircraft entered and briefly departed its Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ), leading Seoul to dispatch fighter jets in response and lodge a protest with both nations.

Intensifying Tokyo-Beijing Strains

While joint Russia-China patrols are not unprecedented, the timing of this mission significantly amplifies tensions, particularly between Japan and China.

The operation follows a diplomatic row earlier this week over an alleged dangerous encounter:

  • Radar Lock-On Incident: Japan accused Chinese J-15 carrier-launched fighter jets of aiming fire-control radar—a precursor to weapon use—at Japanese F-15 military aircraft over international waters near Okinawa last weekend.
  • Conflicting Accounts: While Tokyo condemned the action as “extremely regrettable and dangerous,” Beijing denied the accusation, countering that Japanese jets had interfered with their training exercises.

This latest friction is fueled by recent statements from Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who indicated last month that Japan could potentially intervene militarily if a Chinese action against Taiwan were to pose a “survival-threatening situation” to Japan’s national security.

A Signal to the West

Analysts view the joint Russian-Chinese air patrol as a clear strategic signal to the U.S. and its regional allies (Japan and South Korea) of the deepening military partnership between Moscow and Beijing.

The coordinated mission demonstrates the growing capability and willingness of both nations to project power far from their respective shores.

As the United States and Japan reaffirm their security alliance, these joint exercises underscore the volatile security environment in the Indo-Pacific, raising the risk of miscalculation with every close encounter.
