Senator Ali Ndume (Borno South) has advised the Federal Government to drastically reduce spending on discretionary services, starting with the National Assembly (NASS), in order to reallocate crucial funds toward tackling the worsening insecurity crisis in Nigeria.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Ndume suggested that Nigerian lawmakers could meet less frequently perhaps only on a quarterly basis with their compensation adjusted accordingly to reflect the reduced sitting schedule.

The longest-serving senator argued that the government must prioritize the safety of its citizens above all else. He called for a reduction in government spending on areas that provide little benefit to the majority of Nigerians.

“Urgently, we must discard everything as far as I am concerned and even if it is necessary to shut down some discretionary services, starting with the National Assembly,” Ndume stated.

He criticized the continuous running of recurrent and overhead costs, even while the 2025 budget remains unresolved, noting that this expenditure primarily benefits less than five percent of Nigerians. He concluded that shutting down these non-essential functions would free up substantial money to increase funding for security and secure the people first.
