Goodluck Jonathan honorary PhD

Former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has been conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree by the Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, during the institution’s 13th Convocation Ceremony. The honour an Honoris Causa in Political Science and International Relations recognises the former President’s long-standing contributions to democracy, peace-building, and good governance across Africa, especially his historic and peaceful concession in the 2015 general elections.

A Recognition of Statesmanship
According to the Vice-Chancellor of Nile University, Prof. Dilli Dogo, the award reflects the university’s commitment to celebrating individuals whose work has created a meaningful and lasting impact on society. Jonathan’s selection was based on his statesmanship and his continued contributions to democratic stability and mediation efforts across the continent since leaving office.

In recent years, the former President has undertaken several international mediation roles, reinforcing his reputation as a continental advocate for peace and a model for emerging African leaders.

Jonathan Reiterates Position on Honorary Degrees
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Jonathan restated his belief that honorary degrees should not be awarded to individuals still holding public office. He argued that such honours carry more integrity when conferred after a leader has left office, allowing for objective assessment without the suspicion of political patronage.

He also advised graduating students to prioritise integrity, discipline, and character, stressing that true education is not only about earning certificates but also about becoming responsible contributors to society.

“It is better when you leave office and people can objectively appreciate your contributions, so it does not appear like eye service,” Jonathan said while receiving the honour in Abuja.

Nile University’s Growing Global Footprint
The institution used the ceremony to highlight its rising international reputation. The Vice-Chancellor announced that qualifications from Nile University are now recognised by leading global bodies, including the UK General Medical Council (GMC) and the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) in the United States. This aligns with the university’s mission, as part of the Honoris United Universities network, to deliver impactful education and produce globally competitive graduates.

The conferment on Dr. Goodluck Jonathan underscores the strong link between academia and public service, celebrating a Nigerian statesman whose influence continues to be felt across Africa and beyond.
