Former presidential candidate for the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has escalated his conflict with political activist and lawyer Deji Adeyanju by filing a 1.5 Billion Naira defamation lawsuit against him at a State High Court.
The legal action targets a series of alleged false and malicious statements that Obi claims Adeyanju published on various social media platforms, including X and Facebook. The court documents describe the posts as a deliberate and malicious campaign of falsehood intended to ridicule and damage Obi’s reputation among the Nigerian public and the international community.
The suit demands 1 Billion Naira in general damages and 500 Million Naira in aggravated damages. Furthermore, Obi is seeking a court order compelling Adeyanju to immediately retract and delete the posts, issue an unreserved public apology across major media, and a perpetual injunction preventing him from publishing any similar statements in the future.
While Adeyanju has previously dared Obi to meet him in court, he is yet to file a formal response to the new suit. The case is seen as a significant move by a major public figure to combat unchecked online misinformation and is expected to be assigned a judge for hearing dates soon.
