Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has publicly criticized the list of ambassadorial nominees sent by President Bola Tinubu to the Senate, describing the selection as “shocking.” Obi asserts that the list confirms his fears that the current administration is actively encouraging corruption and mediocrity in public service.

In a post shared on his official X handle, Obi lamented that some of the names proposed to represent Nigeria globally should not have been considered. He linked the controversial appointments to a broader failure in Nigerian leadership, noting a prevailing attitude of frivolity among the political class even as citizens suffer from insecurity and economic hardship.

Obi condemned the perceived disconnect, highlighting instances where leaders prioritize celebrations while mass killings and school abductions occur. He argued that a nation can only progress when “compassion, competence, and accountability guide public office.”

While expressing disappointment over the alleged moral decay and indifference, Obi urged Nigerian youths not to lose hope. He maintained that the dream of a “New Nigeria” one that is just, secure, and respected remains possible, but requires citizens to refuse to accept failure as the nation’s destiny. Obi’s statement sharply escalates political tensions around President Tinubu’s key appointments and the state of governance.
