The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its crucial 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which had been scheduled for October 15 at the party’s headquarters in Abuja. The NEC is the party’s highest decision-making organ.

In a statement issued on Monday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba attributed the postponement simply to “recent developments” within the party, without providing further details on the nature of these internal issues. A new date for the NEC meeting, which was meant to precede the National Convention set for November 15, will be communicated to members later.

Context: The Looming Defection Crisis
The postponement occurs amid a significant wave of instability and anticipated defections hitting the main opposition party:

High-Profile Defections: Several prominent members, including governors and lawmakers, have recently crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Mbah’s Move: Critically, the postponement coincides with the widely anticipated formal defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah from the PDP to the APC, which was expected to happen on the same day the NEC meeting was postponed.

Other Governors: There is also speculation in political circles that Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas is on the verge of joining the ruling party as well.

Legal Challenges: The party is simultaneously battling legal issues, with associates of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, having filed a lawsuit to prevent the upcoming National Convention from taking place.

The decision to delay the NEC meeting is seen as a move by the PDPโ€™s National Working Committee (NWC) to address the growing political hemorrhage and prevent further internal fracturing before key organizational deadlines.
