The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised the alarm, asserting that Nigeria’s pervasive banditry and kidnapping crisis is being driven by a rapidly expanding and highly lucrative criminal economy.

Speaking during a televised interview on Wednesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Ini Ememobong described insecurity in the country as a trillion-naira industry, far more complex than the Federal Government’s current approach acknowledges.

Ememobong criticized what he termed the politicization of national security, arguing that public appeals for the release of victims or dialogue with armed groups are insufficient and ultimately embolden criminals.

“When individuals with illegal weapons negotiate with state actors, it signals a collapse of governmental authority,” Ememobong warned.

He emphasized that government measures such as photo-ops with security chiefs and security recruitment drives are largely cosmetic and fail to address the root causes of violence. According to the PDP, as long as ransoms are paid, kidnappings will continue to thrive.

The party urged the Federal Government to demonstrate strong political will by issuing decisive directives to halt violent attacks. The PDP stressed that action must target the systems enabling ransom-driven criminal operations to restore national security and reaffirm state authority.
