Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has regained his freedom from Kuje Prison in Abuja after four days in detention. His release came on Monday, October 27, 2025, after fulfilling the bail conditions imposed by a Magistrate Court in Kuje.
Sowore, a co-convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, was arrested alongside 13 others during a peaceful #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja. The group, which included Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyer Aloy Ejimakor and his younger brother Emmanuel, was apprehended by the Nigeria Police Force shortly after leaving the Federal High Court, where proceedings related to Kanu’s case had taken place.
The arrested individuals were charged with unlawful assembly and disturbance of public peace before Magistrate Abubakar Sai’id. On Friday, the court granted them bail set at ₦500,000 each, with specific conditions that had to be met before release. These included providing a verified National Identification Number (NIN), submitting a three-year tax clearance certificate, and depositing their international passports.
After meeting these requirements, Sowore and his co-defendants were officially released on Monday, marking the end of a brief but widely publicized detention.
Shortly after his release, Sowore confirmed the news through his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, criticizing the authorities and labeling his detention as illegal. He reaffirmed his dedication to activism and the campaign for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, declaring his continued resolve to challenge injustice and defend human rights in Nigeria.
