Tensions are rising within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Northern Elders Unity Forum has publicly accused Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State, of plotting to destroy the party and cripple the broader opposition movement in Nigeria.
The allegations came in a strongly worded statement issued by Dr. Abbas Sadauki, the National Secretary of the Forum, following a strategic meeting of Northern PDP stakeholders. Sadauki claimed that Wike and a faction within the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) were allegedly collaborating with external political forces to destabilize the party’s leadership structure.
“There is no reason to allow these ungrateful people, who are under the guidance of their master, Mr. Nyesom Wike, whose ambition is to destroy anything good about the PDP or any opposition movement, to succeed in destroying our party,” Sadauki stated.
According to the Forum, Wike and his allies are employing tactics such as orchestrating court cases, leveraging political influence, and manipulating internal divisions to weaken the PDP’s cohesion and derail its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Call to Protect the PDP National Convention
The Northern PDP Elders specifically cautioned against groups attempting to disrupt the party’s upcoming National Convention in Ibadan, labeling such actors as “jokers” and “predators” determined to derail the PDP’s unity.
Dr. Sadauki also appealed to the judiciary and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain vigilant against “political mercenaries” allegedly using state institutions to interfere with opposition politics.
Commitment to Party Rebuilding
Despite the growing tensions, the Forum reaffirmed its loyalty to the party’s current leadership, declaring full support for Ambassador Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman, and other stakeholders genuinely working toward rebuilding and uniting the PDP.
The statement concluded with a call for members across all regions to stay united and resist any internal or external attempts to derail Nigeria’s leading opposition party as it prepares to reposition for 2027.
