Nigerian para powerlifting icon Folashade Oluwafemiayo delivered a commanding performance to secure a Gold Medal at the World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Cairo on Thursday, marking a special victory as it was the first time the event has been hosted in Africa.
The 40-year-old athlete, already a two-time Paralympic champion, lifted a monumental 168 kg in the women’s over 86 kg category. This lift not only earned her a fourth career world title but also shattered her own standing world record of 167 kg, which she had previously set during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Oluwafemiayo’s latest achievement extends her remarkable global dominance in the sport. She successfully finished ahead of China’s Cui Zhe, who took home the silver medal, and Iran’s Nikoo Roozbahani, who claimed the bronze.
Her storied journey in the sport has been marked by extraordinary resilience, including comebacks following a two-year suspension and periods of absence due to pregnancy. Since winning her first World Championships in Mexico City in 2017, Oluwafemiayo has consistently set new benchmarks, confirming her status as one of Africa’s most decorated para-athletes.
