Nigeria Initiates Diplomatic Efforts for Release of Detained Military Aircraft and Soldiers in Burkina Faso

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced high-level diplomatic talks to secure the prompt release of a Nigerian military transport aircraft and its personnel currently detained in Burkina Faso. The detention, now in its fourth day, involves a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 aircraft and 11 soldiers who were forced to land by Burkinabe authorities over an alleged unauthorised violation of their airspace.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now spearheading the resolution process, with the Nigerian Embassy in Ouagadougou actively engaging the host government.
According to a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, discussions are underway to secure the release of the crew and the aircraft.
The NAF had earlier clarified that the aircraft was on a mission to Portugal and made a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso after its crew detected a technical issue shortly after departing Lagos. The NAF explained that the diversion was in line with international safety protocols and that the crew was being treated courteously by local officials.
However, the military government of Burkina Faso, citing a lack of authorization, described the entry into its airspace as a serious breach of sovereignty. The diplomatic engagements are crucial for resolving the incident and ensuring the safe return of the personnel and the military aircraft.
