The Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of the ICM Shoprite outlet over alleged tax non-compliance, sparking frustration among shoppers and residents relying on the store for last-minute festive purchases.
According to the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), a Notice of Non-Compliance was pasted at the premises, stating that the owner or occupant failed to meet statutory tax obligations under relevant tax laws. The notice warned that removing it without authorization constitutes an offence, adding that the premises would remain sealed until compliance is achieved. Violations, according to the notice, are punishable under the Personal Income Tax Act, with penalties ranging from fines to possible imprisonment.
The prolonged closure has caused significant inconvenience for consumers, especially during the peak Christmas season. Many residents expressed disappointment, noting that the Shoprite outlet is a convenient option for essential and last-minute shopping. “Amid Christmas celebrations, this has really affected our plans. This is one of the most accessible places to shop,” a shopper lamented.
As of the time of filing this report, neither Shoprite management nor the Lagos State Government has issued an official statement regarding when the outlet will reopen.
The incident has reignited concerns about enforcement actions during festive periods, highlighting the delicate balance between regulatory compliance and consumer convenience.
