Kemi Badenoch

Recent reports claiming that the Conservative Party has voted against Kemi Badenoch’s leadership are inaccurate. There has been no formal ballot or official process within the party determining that Badenoch should not continue as leader ahead of the next UK general election.

The confusion appears to have originated from recent opinion polls rather than any official Conservative Party procedure. Surveys such as one conducted by YouGov suggest that party members are divided over whether Badenoch is the right figure to lead the Conservatives into the next general election. While these figures have fueled speculation about her leadership, they do not reflect a formal decision or an internal vote of no confidence.

According to party rules, a Conservative leadership challenge can only be triggered if at least 15 percent of Conservative Members of Parliament submit letters of no confidence to the chairman of the 1922 Committee. As of now, there is no evidence that such a threshold has been met, nor is there any indication that a formal leadership contest has been initiated.

Kemi Badenoch therefore remains the official Leader of the Conservative Party. Any change in her position would have to follow the established party procedures for a leadership challenge and election.

The clarification comes amid heightened speculation within British politics about the future direction of the Conservative Party following its recent electoral setbacks and as it prepares for the next general election in the coming years.
