Inibehe Effiong Explains Root Causes of Political Conflict Between Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara

Prominent human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has weighed in on the intensifying political crisis in Rivers State, identifying the struggle for state resources as the primary driver of the feud between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ on Friday, Effiong argued that the ongoing friction transcends constitutional interpretations. Instead, he characterized the situation as a manifestation of “clear political enmity” rooted in the control of Rivers State’s vast wealth. He highlighted that the state’s status as a petroleum-rich hub makes it a high-stakes environment for political actors.
Effiong challenged the narrative that the Rivers State House of Assembly’s actions are motivated by constitutional duty. He questioned whether the grievances of the lawmakers were based on public welfare issues, such as healthcare or infrastructure, or if they were tied to the allocation of state funds. Specifically, he referenced allegations involving N600 billion, suggesting that individual interests have been elevated above the welfare of the citizenry.
The lawyer’s insights come as impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara loom, further destabilizing the region. Effiong’s analysis suggests that until the underlying battle for fiscal control is resolved, the political theater in Rivers State will continue to overshadow governance. He urged Nigerians not to be distracted by “legal sophistry” but to recognize the financial motivations steering the conflict between the former allies.
