Former Senator for Adamawa North, Elisha Abbo, has been detained by officers of the Nigeria Police Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja following grave allegations of raping a 13-year-old secondary school student.
According to the victim’s parents, the incident allegedly occurred on June 29, 2025, at Abbo’s private residence in Katampe, Abuja. They further claimed that the former lawmaker attempted to silence the family by sending money to the girl’s father after the alleged assault.
In a dramatic twist, the family also accused former Adamawa governorship candidate, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Binani), of interfering in the matter. They allege that Binani visited their home in an attempt to suppress the case and discourage them from going public with the claims.
Police sources have confirmed Abbo’s detention and ongoing interrogation at FCID headquarters. Senior officers, speaking to journalists, assured that the investigation would be handled with utmost seriousness and without political interference.
This latest controversy comes after a series of scandals linked to the ex-lawmaker. Abbo first gained national infamy in 2019 when a viral video showed him assaulting a woman in a sex toy shop. He later lost his Senate seat in 2023 following a Court of Appeal ruling.
The shocking allegations have already sparked outrage from civil society groups and child rights advocates, who insist that the case will serve as a litmus test for Nigeria’s criminal justice system. They are demanding a transparent investigation and swift prosecution if the charges are proven.
As of the time of reporting, neither Abbo nor his legal team has issued an official public statement addressing the allegations.
