Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, has made a shocking revelation that agents of Boko Haram were discovered on the Nigerian Army recruitment roster. He warned that this security breach severely undermines the nation’s ability to tackle the persistent insecurity crisis.
Speaking during a special parliamentary session on security challenges, Wase noted that the infiltration helps explain why armed groups, including Boko Haram, continue to operate with impunity across Nigeria. He stated that the former Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Muktar Betara, could confirm the discovery of criminals’ names, including those affiliated with the terrorist group, within the Army recruitment list.
Wase, who has personally lost family members to terrorism, emphasized that the current security challenge is worse than widely perceived, with an estimated N5 billion reportedly paid in ransom in one year and over 30,000 lives lost to insurgency over time.
He strongly criticized the weaknesses in recruitment procedures, urging politicians to recommend individuals of high integrity and character instead of allowing criminal elements to penetrate critical security institutions. Wase stressed that until the system is fundamentally changed and these internal security breaches are addressed, genuine counter-insurgency efforts will fail
