FINANCIAL FOUL PLAY: Reps Launch Probe Into NFF Over Alleged Mismanagement of $25m FIFA CAF Grants

The Nigerian football authority has come under fresh scrutiny as the House of Representatives launches a comprehensive investigation into the alleged mismanagement of over $25 million in grants received from the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
During a recent plenary session, lawmakers adopted a motion to uncover the alleged misuse of development funds by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) between 2015 and 2025. According to the House, the period in question shows no visible or proportional investment to justify the significant financial inflows the NFF received.
The probe stems from concerns that the chronic underperformance of Nigerian national football teams may be linked to systemic financial mismanagement. Lawmakers highlighted that despite receiving over $25 million in grants for football development, there has been little progress in infrastructure, grassroots investment, or player development programs.
Previous reports also point to a pattern of financial irregularities. A 2016 FIFA audit query raised concerns over the handling of a $1.1 million development grant, noting that more than $802,000 lacked proper documentation. Similarly, approximately $1.2 million, intended for football development, was reportedly spent on constructing the Birnin Kebbi Stadium, which has since been described as substandard and not reflective of the large expenditure.
In addition to these allegations, the investigation will revisit earlier corruption claims that led to probes by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), involving former NFF presidents and executives.
The House emphasized that this investigation is crucial for restoring credibility and accountability within Nigerian football. Former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh, was recently referenced by lawmakers for publicly accusing the NFF of corruption, a factor he claimed has long hindered the growth of football in Nigeria.
To ensure transparency, a Special Committee has been established by the House to conduct the inquiry and present findings that may lead to administrative and financial reforms. The NFF $25m Mismanagement Probe is expected to expose potential financial irregularities and, ultimately, reshape the governance of Nigeria’s most cherished sport to guarantee that FIFA and CAF development funds truly benefit the nation’s football system.
