National Assembly amendment

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed his call for the National Assembly to expedite the legalisation of State Police, describing it as an urgent and necessary reform to tackle Nigeria’s deepening insecurity. The President made it clear that decentralising policing is essential to combating kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism that continue to threaten the stability of communities across the country.

The President’s renewed push comes amid intensified military operations and increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force. However, Tinubu insists that federal policing alone cannot address crimes rooted in local realities. He argues that state-controlled police forces would be better equipped to understand community dynamics, gather credible intelligence, and respond rapidly to emerging threats.

He emphasized the importance of local familiarity terrain, culture, and language as critical in building stronger grassroots security networks. According to him, state-level agencies would no longer need to wait for federal directives during urgent crises, potentially saving more lives and property. “I am reviewing all the aspects of security; I have to create state police. We are looking at that holistically,” Tinubu said.

To make State Police a reality, the 1999 Constitution must be amended since policing currently falls under the Federal Government’s exclusive responsibility. Several bills have already been introduced in both legislative chambers, but they require approval from two-thirds of lawmakers and ratification by at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.

Tinubu’s open endorsement marks a major turning point, as many analysts believe that his backing will encourage lawmakers and governors to finally align on this long-debated reform.

Despite widespread support, concerns remain about potential misuse by state governors, especially during political periods. The Tinubu administration has acknowledged these concerns and hinted at creating a central oversight mechanism to prevent political interference and ensure a unified policing standard nationwide.

With the President’s directive serving as a green light, all eyes are now on the National Assembly to take the next steps. Updates on the constitutional amendment process will continue as the proposal progresses.
