The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Education, has moved to clear up confusion regarding the compulsory subjects for students registering for their O’Level examinations. Despite the recent announcement of streamlined tertiary admission requirements, the Ministry confirmed that English Language and Mathematics absolutely remain compulsory subjects for all students to register for and sit during their Senior School Certificate Examinations.
This crucial clarification, signed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, followed widespread misinterpretation of a new policy that seeks to widen access to higher education. That original reform proposed that senior secondary school students in the arts and humanities would no longer be required to present a credit pass in Mathematics for admission into certain non-science-related tertiary programmes.
However, the Ministry’s latest statement stressed that while the admission criteria for specific programmes are being made more flexible, this does not in any way exempt candidates from the fundamental requirement of taking both core subjects.
Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, explained that the reform aims to promote flexibility, inclusiveness, and fairness in tertiary admissions, ensuring that capable students are not denied access due to deficiencies in subjects unrelated to their chosen fields. He affirmed that the adjustment only affects the specific credit passes required for admission into certain departments, not the basic mandate to register for and sit for both Mathematics and English Language, which remain vital components of a sound educational foundation. The Ministry urged all stakeholders to rely only on official communication channels for accurate updates on policy changes.
