A significant security breach has heightened fears in Kogi State after armed bandits attacked a church during Sunday service, killing one person and kidnapping numerous worshippers.
The incident occurred at the First ECWA Church in Ayetoro Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of the state.
The assailants reportedly stormed the premises on Sunday, December 14, 2025, while the service was in progress, opening fire to cause widespread panic among the congregation.
Details of the Assault
Local authorities and security reports confirmed the attack, which claimed the life of a male worshipper identified only as Jayjay.
Following the shooting, the bandits reportedly abducted more than 15 worshippers, seizing them at gunpoint and forcing them into the surrounding bush.
The Chairman of the Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, Zacchaeus Dare, confirmed the incident, stating that security operatives have been mobilized to track the criminals and secure the release of the abducted victims.
He also reportedly noted that security forces were able to neutralize about five of the bandits during the engagement.
The Chairman also voiced frustration over what he described as the disregard by some clerics for government advisories that caution against prolonged services in areas identified as vulnerable.
He suggested that such disregard undermines the efforts of security agencies.
Worsening Insecurity in Okun Land
This attack marks the second major incident targeting a church in the Okun land area within a short period, underscoring a deepening crisis of insecurity in the region.
The latest assault comes just weeks after a similar attack on November 30, 2025, at a Cherubim and Seraphim Church in Ejiba, Yagba West Local Government Area.
In that attack, a cleric known as Pastor Orlando and approximately 13 other worshippers were abducted.
The kidnappers of the Ejiba victims were reported to have initially demanded a ransom of ₦500 million, which was later reduced to ₦200 million.
The recurring attacks, which include previous strikes on communities like Illai and Okeagi, have created a pervasive atmosphere of anxiety among residents.
Community leaders are urgently appealing for enhanced security measures from both the State and Federal Governments to protect lives and properties and prevent the complete disruption of normal life in these rural communities.
The immediate priority for security agencies remains the safe rescue of the abducted Ayetoro Kiri worshippers and the pursuit of the criminals responsible for the deadly raid.
