In a powerful demonstration of faith mixed with a renewed commitment to security operations, the state government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has mobilised 4,444 Qur’an memorizers (Huffaz) for a special, statewide prayer session.

A Call for Divine Intervention

The mass gathering, held in the state capital, was a spiritual call for divine intervention against the rising tide of attacks and abductions that have been particularly concentrated in border communities like Tsanyawa and Shanono Local Government Areas.

The event, which included the recitation of the Holy Qur’an and supplications (Adhkar), drew massive attendance from Islamic scholars, clerics, traditional rulers—including the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II—and thousands of residents.

  • Spiritual Unity: The event underscored a belief that prayer is a potent weapon against evil, uniting the populace in a collective appeal for peace and stability.
  • Non-Partisan Front: Governor Yusuf used the platform to warn against politicising the issue of insecurity, urging all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation, to join the fight against banditry.

Reinforcing the Security Apparatus
The spiritual approach is being complemented by concrete security measures.

The Kano State Government is not relying on prayers alone; it is intensifying efforts to strengthen its security forces and apparatus.

  • Federal Support: Governor Yusuf recently met with President Bola Tinubu, who has since ordered the deployment of a specialised security team to Kano to reinforce existing operations.
  • Logistics and Surveillance: The state government has pledged to acquire drones and additional logistics to enhance surveillance and rapid-response capabilities, particularly in the vulnerable border corridors shared with Katsina State.

The Rising Threat of Banditry

Kano, long considered an oasis of relative calm in the troubled North-West, is now grappling with what officials describe as an “alien” security threat.

The rise in attacks is primarily attributed to bandits being dislodged from neighboring states by intensified military operations, leading them to relocate to Kano’s vast rural areas.

The consequences of this insecurity are far-reaching:

  • Community Displacement: Villages are being emptied, farmlands abandoned, and markets are closing early as fear grips the residents.
  • Economic Risk: The encroachment of insecurity threatens to disrupt the state’s commercial activities, placing strain on its position as the economic hub of the North.

The dual strategy—combining fervent spiritual supplication with the provision of sophisticated security tools—is Kano’s latest, comprehensive attempt to restore normalcy and safeguard its citizens from the burgeoning wave of criminality.
