The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), for continuous interrogation regarding multiple serious financial allegations. The ex-Minister remains in custody after reportedly failing to meet bail conditions set by the anti-graft agency.

The EFCC’s investigation is focused on several key issues linked to Malami’s tenure. Top on the list are questions regarding the handling and whereabouts of recovered Abacha loot, specifically $322 million repatriated from Switzerland and $22 million from the Island of Jersey. The probe is also looking into alleged money laundering and suspicious accounts, including the former AGF’s sudden N10 billion investments in his home state of Kebbi State.

Most seriously, the former Minister is being questioned over allegations of terrorism financing, a claim he has vehemently denied. Malami stated that his public record in office, including his role in strengthening Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks, directly contradicts any insinuation of complicity.

The detention underscores the new administration’s intensified anti-corruption drive, as investigators profile Malami’s assets and his alleged involvement in financial irregularities.
