The nation is bracing for an imminent and total power outage after the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) initiated a nationwide electricity workers strike Nigeria. The industrial action, which commenced after an ultimatum expired, has brought operations across the entire power value chain to a grinding halt, raising fears of an unprecedented nationwide blackout looms for millions of homes and businesses.
The Breakdown: Why the Strike?
The industrial dispute primarily centers on unresolved welfare and operational issues with the management of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
According to a directive from the NUEE, their members were ordered to withdraw their services indefinitely due to a perceived disregard for their long-standing grievances. The union stressed that they “cannot continue to fold our arms while we watch our rights being vehemently violated.”
Key NUEE Demands:
• Implementation of the National Minimum Wage across the board.
• Resolution of issues arising from the recent unbundling of TCN.
• Immediate end to the casualisation of workers within the power sector.
• Payment of outstanding retirement benefits and staff salaries owed since April 2025.
• Provision of essential working tools, operational vehicles, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which were last supplied in 2021.
