President Bola Tinubu has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its impressive achievements in combating corruption during the first two years of his administration. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at the opening of the 7th EFCC-NJI Capacity Building Workshop for Justices and Judges in Abuja, the President hailed the Commission’s record-breaking performance in securing convictions and recovering assets.
According to a statement from the EFCC spokesman, the Commission has secured over 7,000 convictions and recovered assets valued at more than ₦500 billion in proceeds of fraud. President Tinubu disclosed that the recovered funds have been strategically reinvested into the Nigerian economy to support key social intervention programs, including the Students Loan initiative and the Consumer Credit Scheme.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability, Tinubu emphasized the importance of collaboration among all branches of government—particularly the judiciary—in sustaining progress in the anti-corruption war. He urged judges to maintain the highest standards of integrity, noting that the credibility of the entire system rests on the moral leadership of public officials.
Meanwhile, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, speaking at the same event, expressed concern over the recurring delays in prosecuting high-profile corruption cases. He criticized what he described as the “convoluted trajectory” of cases involving politically exposed persons, warning that the persistent “weaponization of procedure” and emphasis on technicalities over substance were undermining public trust in the justice system.
Olukoyede reaffirmed the EFCC’s determination to push forward despite these challenges, calling for judicial cooperation to ensure that Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive remains effective and credible.
