The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has attributed the growing surge in cybercrime across Nigeria to laziness, greed, and the obsession with quick wealth among the country’s youth. The agency expressed concern that many young Nigerians now view internet fraud as a fast track to success instead of building sustainable and legitimate careers.
EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede made this known during an orientation and sensitisation programme for new students of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Nigerian Air Force, Mando, Kaduna, for the 2025/2026 academic session. He was represented by Chief Superintendent Nana Fatima Abubakar of the Public Affairs Department, Kaduna Zonal Directorate.
Olukoyede warned that there is no shortcut to genuine success, adding that the constant pursuit of easy money often ends in tragedy — leading to imprisonment, depression, loss of reputation, or even death.
He highlighted greed, peer pressure, lack of patriotism, and laziness as key factors behind the alarming rise in cybercrime cases. The EFCC Chairman also revealed that many perpetrators engage in drug abuse and fetish practices to support their fraudulent activities.
Calling for a mindset shift, Olukoyede urged Nigerian youths to channel their creativity, intelligence, and digital skills into productive ventures that add value to society. He emphasized that success achieved through hard work and integrity lasts longer and brings pride instead of shame.
The EFCC also encouraged citizens to support the fight against corruption and fraud by reporting suspicious activities through the agency’s Eagle Eye App, assuring that whistleblowers’ identities will remain protected.
According to Olukoyede, the commission will continue to strengthen its public enlightenment efforts, targeting young Nigerians with campaigns that promote ethical behavior and national responsibility.
