The political landscape of Rivers State has been dramatically reshaped today as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Martin Amaewhule, along with 15 other lawmakers, officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection, which was announced during a plenary session on Friday, sends a clear signal in the escalating political crisis that has gripped the state.

Citing PDP’s ‘Division’ and a Pledge to Partner with the Presidency

The Speaker, Martin Amaewhule, who represents Obio-Akpor I constituency, confirmed his decision to leave the PDP, citing deep “division in the PDP” as the primary motivation for the move.

Speaking on the floor of the House, the Speaker stated that joining the APC would enable him and his colleagues to “partner with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the overall good of the Rivers people.”
