The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has confirmed that Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, popularly known as Baba Ijesha, has been added to the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register. The update follows his release from prison after completing his sentence for sexually assaulting a minor—a case that generated widespread national outrage and intensified discussions on child protection across Nigeria.

Baba Ijesha was convicted in 2021 for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl after a highly publicised trial that drew condemnation from the film industry, activists, and human rights organisations. Shortly after his release, a viral but unverified video circulated online appearing to show him inside a vehicle expressing relief and saying he needed time to rest. The clip sparked renewed public interest, with many questioning the legitimacy of his release and whether his conviction had been overturned.

The Lagos State Government addressed the speculation on Monday following false claims that the Court of Appeal had nullified his conviction. Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), dismissed the rumours as false and misleading, describing them as attempts to undermine public confidence in the justice system. He warned individuals spreading misinformation—including actor Yomi Fabiyi and others amplifying the claims—to desist and act responsibly.

Soon after the Attorney General’s clarification, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency issued a statement on X confirming that Baba Ijesha’s conviction remains valid. The agency added that his name has now been officially entered into the Lagos Sex Offenders Register in line with Section 37 of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of 2021. According to the agency, the register serves as a crucial tool for public safety, allowing citizens to access verified information about individuals convicted of sexual offences while reinforcing accountability for offenders.

The agency noted that the update aligns with ongoing government efforts to strengthen the state’s response to sexual violence. It emphasised that the register is both a legal requirement and a preventive measure designed to protect minors and vulnerable persons from repeat offenders.

The development also follows renewed public advocacy, particularly from comedienne Damilola Adekoya (Princess), who played a central role in the original case. During an Instagram Live session on November 15, 2025, she appealed to the government to ensure Baba Ijesha’s name was added to the register to uphold transparency and safeguard potential future victims.

With the actor’s name now formally documented in the Sex Offenders Register, the Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to combating sexual violence. Authorities say they will continue providing accurate information to the public to counter misinformation and ensure better protection for children across the state.
