“It was needless and stupid,” Slot told reporters. “If you score in the Champions League final in the 87th minute after outplaying three players and hitting it in the top corner, maybe I can understand. But this wasn’t that moment. It was not smart — I called it stupid right away as well.”
The Dutchman revealed he gave Ekitike the cold shoulder as he left the pitch, emphasizing that such mistakes are unacceptable in high-pressure fixtures.
Alexander Isak Scores First Liverpool Goal
While Ekitike drew criticism, Slot reserved praise for Alexander Isak, who opened the scoring with his first goal for Liverpool.
“It’s nice because it’s only six or seven days since his debut,” Slot said. “He’s the British record signing, so of course there’s pressure if he doesn’t score quickly. But I’m very happy with what I’ve seen from him. After the international break, we can expect even more.”
Isak’s early strike was followed by Southampton’s equalizer before Ekitike’s late intervention — and subsequent dismissal — settled the tie.
