Anfield endured one of its darkest European nights as Liverpool were dismantled 4-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, deepening a crisis that has left head coach Arne Slot under immense scrutiny. The defeat marks Liverpool’s third consecutive loss by three goals or more, raising serious questions about the club’s direction.
The night started poorly when captain Virgil van Dijk handled the ball inside the box just six minutes into the match. Ivan Perišić converted the resulting penalty, putting PSV ahead. Liverpool responded quickly as Dominik Szoboszlai struck the club’s 500th goal in European Cup and Champions League history, but the equalizer failed to ignite any real turnaround.
The second half was a collapse of alarming proportions. PSV, coached by Peter Bosz, exploited Liverpool’s disorganized defense repeatedly. Guus Til restored the visitors’ lead in the 56th minute, finishing from a low cross as the hosts failed to track runners. Couhaib Driouech made it 3-1 in the 73rd minute after pouncing on a rebound that exposed Liverpool’s inability to defend under pressure. Driouech added another deep into stoppage time, placing the ball past a static back line after a cutback from Sergino Dest.
Liverpool have now conceded ten goals in their last three games, a defensive record reminiscent of the club’s struggles during their relegation season in 1953–54. The loss to PSV follows a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and forms part of a run of nine losses in twelve matches across all competitions.
Despite spending more than $500 million in the summer transfer window, Liverpool look disconnected and unsure of their tactical identity. Errors at the back continue to cost them, injuries have disrupted stability, and several big-name signings are yet to find cohesion. Forward Cody Gakpo described the recent defeat to Forest as “an embarrassment,” reflecting the mood within the squad.
Arne Slot faced reporters after the match, acknowledging the pressure surrounding his position but maintaining he feels secure for now. He stated that criticism is normal for any manager experiencing such poor results and insisted that he still has the backing of the club’s board.
However, with fan frustration escalating and performances deteriorating, Liverpool’s leadership faces difficult decisions about how to arrest the team’s freefall. Slot must quickly find solutions, as patience among supporters is rapidly diminishing.
