WBC World Cup

Nigerian boxing is celebrating a significant milestone as the nation, alongside Uganda and the Republic of Benin, officially confirms its participation in the inaugural WBC Amateur World Cup. The prestigious global event is scheduled to take place from October 16 to 19, 2025, at the Municipal Auditorium in Tijuana, Mexico.

The three African nations secured their spots following outstanding displays at the WBC-ABU Amateur Boxing Championship, which was successfully hosted in Lagos, Nigeria, earlier this year. The continental tournament served as the official qualifying path for the global competition.

Nigeria Fields Six Boxers with High Hopes
Nigeria will lead the African contingent with six boxers, a testament to the nation’s rising boxing prowess. Uganda will send four boxers, while the Republic of Benin will be represented by one athlete.

The Nigerian team is currently undergoing intensive training at the Lagos Boxing Hall of Fame Gym in Surulere, with a comprehensive camp that includes coaches, technical directors, and nutritionists, all focused on optimal preparation for the world stage.

Among the nation’s brightest prospects is Precious Anine, who competes in the women’s 63kg category. Anine has expressed strong confidence that the Nigerian team is ready to make the entire continent proud in Mexico.

Key Sponsorship Secures Participation
A significant boost for the Nigerian contingent comes from the Yucateco Group, led by Omonlei Imadu, in partnership with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, and the Hall of Fame Foundation. This group has pledged full sponsorship, covering all travel, accommodation, and logistics for the athletes and officials heading to Mexico.

The Nigeria WBC Amateur World Cup Qualification marks a historic moment for the country and for African boxing. It signals the continent’s growing recognition in global boxing circuits, reinforced by the successful staging of the first-ever WBC-ABU qualifier on African soil in Lagos. The participation in the World Cup, under the World Boxing Council’s “Green & Gold” initiative, promises to be a career-defining experience for these talented young athletes.
