The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government against exploiting the recent reports of an alleged coup plot as a pretext for a “political witch-hunt” or to stifle dissenting voices.
Speaking through its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party criticized the Federal Government for its prolonged silence on the matter, arguing that the government’s failure to offer a clear position despite the military’s denial of the coup reportsโhas allowed the rumors to fester and fuel unnecessary anxiety.
Key Concerns and Demands:
Potential Misuse: The ADC warned that any attempt to use the rumored coup for political gain would endanger Nigeria’s democracy and fundamental freedoms. The party expressed particular alarm over media claims linking unnamed opposition politicians to the alleged plot, suggesting this could be a pretext to clamp down on opposition figures or place them under undue surveillance.
Need for Clarity: The party accused the All Progressives Congress-led administration of exploiting the coup narrative to divert attention from issues of misgovernance and to gain public sympathy.
Call for Transparency: The ADC called on the Federal Government to immediately clarify the true nature of the alleged coup. It demanded that if a genuine threat to national security exists, the government must be transparent and brief the nation. Conversely, if the reports are false, the government must decisively quash the rumor rather than “weaponise national security as a pretext to silence opposition and political dissent.”
The ADC reaffirmed its resolute opposition to dictatorship in any form and warned that it would strongly oppose any ploy by the government to intimidate lawful voices under the guise of national security.
