The Abia State Government has moved to calm the anxieties of commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke riders, regarding the introduction of electric buses into the state’s transportation system. Addressing the growing concerns over job security, the government clarified that the modern transit initiative is designed to complement existing transport modes rather than displace them.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, provided these assurances while briefing journalists on the outcome of the state executive council meeting. He emphasized that the Alex Otti administration is focused on enhancing urban mobility and reducing carbon emissions, but not at the expense of the livelihoods of thousands of tricycle operators.

According to the state government, the electric bus scheme is part of a broader strategy to modernize the transport sector in major cities like Aba and Umuahia. By integrating eco-friendly vehicles, the state aims to provide cheaper and more efficient alternatives for commuters while ensuring that Keke riders remain an essential part of the last-mile connectivity network.

The government further revealed that plans are being discussed to offer training and transition opportunities for existing transporters to participate in the new green energy economy. The administration reiterated its commitment to inclusive growth, noting that the goal is to expand the transport economy, thereby creating more opportunities for all stakeholders.

The commissioner urged the Keke riders to ignore rumors of an impending ban, stressing that the administration values their contribution to the state’s economy and will continue to engage with their unions to ensure a smooth integration of the new electric vehicles.
