The Super Falcons of Nigeria, the 10-time African champions, have officially secured their spot at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), set to take place in Morocco. Despite being held to a 1-1 draw by the Benin Republic in the second leg of the final qualifying round in Abeokuta on Tuesday, Nigeria advanced comfortably with a 3-1 aggregate victory.
Playing before a vibrant home crowd at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the Super Falcons wasted no time asserting dominance. Defender Ashley Plumptre opened the scoring in the 13th minute, marking her first-ever goal for the national team. The Benin Amazons, however, refused to back down and found the equalizer on the hour mark through Yasminath Djibril’s precise free-kick. Still, Nigeria’s earlier 2-0 win in the first leg in Lome, Togo, proved decisive in securing qualification.
The qualification reinforces Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football, granting them the chance to defend their title and chase an incredible 11th continental trophy in 14 editions. It also places them in strong contention for a potential berth at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, as top-performing teams at the WAFCON typically qualify automatically.
Coach Justin Madugu’s side showcased grit and discipline, ensuring that Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun’s ₦50 million motivation before the match translated into a performance worthy of champions. With this victory, the Super Falcons continue their legacy as Africa’s most successful women’s national team, inspiring a new generation of football talent.
